Portugal's Democratic Alliance opposition party is on track to gain the most votes at next month's snap election, but miss out on a parliamentary majority, according to the findings of a poll published on Tuesday.

The survey carried out by CESOP/Catholic University for RTP broadcaster and newspaper Publico showed support for the centre-right Alliance at 32%, surpassing the governing Socialist Party at 28%, in contrast to other recent opinion polls.

Although both have fared better since the previous survey undertaken in November, the far-right, anti-establishment party Chega has also seen an increase in support, rising from 16% to 19%, bolstering its chances of becoming a kingmaker, Reuters reports.

Last month, leader of Chega, Andre Ventura said his party would demand to be part of a right-wing coalition government in exchange for parliamentary support.

That said, Luis Montenegro, head of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) that leads the three-party Democratic Alliance, has rebuffed any sort of agreement made with Chega.

The upcoming snap election set for March 10 was called following Socialist Prime Minister Antonio Costa's resignation in November. This came after an investigation was carried out into supposed illegalities in the handling of green investment projects. Costa strongly denies any misconduct.

Furthermore, the results of the latest poll reveal a similar situation to that in the Azores Islands last weekend. The Alliance was missing three seats for an outright majority, Chega – with five seats – attempted to negotiate a deal, but it was rejected by the local Social Democratic Party.

According to Luis Montenegro, this could be replicated on a national level, with the potential for a minority government that could only be toppled if the Socialists reached an agreement with Chega.

"It's an inspiration for what we're going to do from March 10 for the whole country," the PSD head told reporters.

CESOP polled a total of 1,192 people between January 24 and February 1.
