Portugal hotels see high demand from UK

Portugal’s largest hotel chain is in huge demand following the UK government’s announcement on Friday that travellers from England will not be required to quarantine after coming back from Portugal. The announcement boosted the Portuguese hotel industry, which had been struggling due to the pandemic.

British tourists were pleased to learn that quarantine will not be forced following holidays in Portugal and quickly booked their trips. Instead of self-isolating, travellers will have to take a Covid PCR test within two days of their arrival in the UK.

Speaking to CNBC, Katya Bauval, executive director of sales at the Vila Vita Parc hotel in the Algarve, the south of Portugal, explained that after the announcement was made, they noted “absolute madness in terms of (booking) requests.”

She added on, “bookings literally tripled in demand since Friday.”

A similar reaction was seen by Portugal’s largest hotel chain, Pestana, which said that demand jumped 250% since Friday and rose by 475% in external booking operators. Jose Theotonio, CEO of Pestana Hotel Group said, “There’s been a very substantial increase in bookings.”

The UK’s announcement on Friday added Portugal to its “green list,” whilst Spain, Italy and Greece missed out.
