Portugal improves ranking in tourism competitiveness

09 Sep 2019

The World Economic Forum has ranked Portugal as the top tourist destination in its recent Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report for 2019.

Ranking at its highest position yet, Portugal landed the 12th spot in overall rankings – marking an improvement from 2017, when it placed in 14th.

The tourism infrastructure component, which analyses the quality of tourist offerings, also saw Portugal rank in first place globally.

The Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report observes a country’s performance and the factors aimed at advancing business in each country’s tourism sector. In order to conduct the report, a detailed analysis of the travel industry in 140 global economies is carried out.

Portugal’s current ranking follows it placing 20th in 2013, 15th in 2015, and 14th in 2017.

“These results show that the 10-year strategy we have built for tourism is paying off. We reached the highest position ever in this ranking and were considered the country with the best tourist infrastructures in the world. Portugal is increasingly an international reference in tourism, and this report is a key piece for attracting investment,” said Ana Mendes Godinho, secretary of state for tourism in Portugal.
