According to new data from Portugal's National Statistics Institute (INE), the Algarve has once again proven to be the country's top tourist destination for both domestic and international travellers.
The figures, released on 29th August, show that the southern region saw an increase in key tourism metrics in July, including the number of guests, overnight stays, and revenue.
The Algarve's tourism board welcomed the news, stating that the region continues to solidify its position as a leader in Portugal's tourism sector.
André Gomes, head of Algarve tourism, stated that the July numbers confirm the region's status as Portugal's top tourist spot for both local and foreign visitors, Portugal Resident reports.
In July, the Algarve saw a 2.3% increase in guests and a 1.9% rise in overnight stays compared to the previous year. The region was responsible for 30.8% of all overnight stays in Portugal, totalling 2.8 million.
For Portuguese residents, overnight stays went up by 2.3%, and for international visitors, they increased by 1.7%. The average stay in the region was 4.25 nights, the second-longest in the country. Portuguese tourists, in particular, had the longest average stay in the Algarve at 3.99 nights.
In addition, in July, the Algarve generated €305 million in revenue, which made up 34.2% of all tourism revenues and 34.3% of accommodation-related earnings across the country.
Furthermore, the American market continues to fuel growth, with a significant increase in both overnight stays (26.4%) and guests (26%). Canada also saw double-digit growth, with a 17.2% rise in guests and a 17.3% increase in overnight stays.
“These results confirm the importance of diversifying markets, supported by a strategy focused on attracting higher-value, long-haul tourists,” said a statement by Turismo do Algarve.
Gomes stated that the Algarve's strong performance highlights its important role in the national economy.
“These indicators reinforce the Algarve’s importance for Portugal and demonstrate the confidence the region continues to inspire in those who visit us,” he stated.
